A skilled workforce growing our food industry

The food industry is vital to Australia in terms of profitability, investment, exports and jobs growth. Australia’s farm and fisheries food production totals around $34.8 billion. Food and beverage processing is the largest manufacturing sector, accounting for 21% of manufacturing sales and services income ($68.9 billion in 2005-06), and employing more than 181 000 people. Retail sales in the food and liquor sector within Australia in 2005-06 were $97.4 billion, representing 46% of total retail turnover. In the same year, food exports made up more than 15% of total Australian merchandise exports and were valued at $23.8 billion.

The key issue currently facing our food industry is globalisation which presents opportunities including: responding to different consumer demands; participating in global supply chains; taking up new technologies including e-commerce and RFID; biotechnologies; and adapting to a changing regulatory environment. The long-term viability of the Australian food industry will depend on the ability of its skilled workforce to capture these emerging global opportunities.
